can anyone tell me anything about this instrument? i saw it at shibaricon this past weekend and was quite intrigued.
anyone ever used it? if so, is it all stingy or is there some thud that can be produced as well?
suggestions on where to purchase one?
thanks for any help.

Re: sjambok
Fri, June 2, 2006 - 4:44 PMI've seen and held the traditional sjambok, but not used it. I have used 2 different items that were similar to sjamboks. One created by an atisian who's no longer in business - made from heavy rubber
The second was the whippygear crop (see whippygear.com). Made from a non-porous material that was stiffer (more like a traditional sjamok, but shorter)
If there's a thuddy way to use it, I didn't find it.
good luck

Re: sjambok
Sun, March 4, 2007 - 8:07 PMthe original sjambok was made ( no kidding) from a rhinoceros penis, and could cut through rhino hide. was hung with weights and oiled several times daily, till it wa about twelve feet long or whatever was required.this is the first time ive ever heard it mentioned as anything but as an historical reference. im a bit of a weapons buff so i found this stuff fascinating. -

The use of a sjambok in South Africa is pretty recent - went hand in hand with Police, riot control and apartheid. I've held both a hippo hide one (very weighty) and the plastic type used by the South African police force in the 1980s/90s

kinda OT : poc and police/oppressive toys
Sun, March 18, 2007 - 9:47 AMhaving a sjambok was something i went back and forth on and then was decided for me when i received the one i have as a gift. playing with it has been interesting in a lot of ways, but always intense. i've also owned/played with other toys that are intensely associated with oppression (the aforementioned police sap, batons, stun guns, etc.) i even have a emotional response to playing w/whips (as a top/dominant and in a bottom role, although i've explored the former much less).
anyone else have direct associations of this type w/their toys? or is it just something to hit someone with?

Re: sjambok
Fri, March 16, 2007 - 9:04 PMi have a (non-traditional) rubber sjambok that i love for SO many reasons *grin*. it is very nasty and, yes, mostly sting oriented, but like most sting toys, you can flip it and use the handle side for more thud. however, with this item it's more like a sap (another item of oppression that we evil perverts have repurposed hahaha) and will give concentrated intense thud. not spread out thud sensation like being flogged. more like being punched. did i mention HOT? anyway, i am happier w/my rubber version, even though i can be a traditionalist, because i am not so comfortable w/the hides of rhinos and hippos for toys.
i got mine at folsom from demetri (sp?). mine also has nifty blades in the screw top handle.
